Free estimate or paid diagnostic visit?

A plumber trip charge is often worth paying when nobody knows yet what is wrong. A free estimate fits when the job is already clear. With either one, ask what the visit produces and whether the fee counts toward the work.

What would flip this choice of visit?

What is a fair trip charge, and is there a dated number?

Dated numbers appear in just one place here: Bob Vila's HomeAdvisor-based summary from 2023, updated that June. Service call fees run between $100 and $350, a charge said to usually pay for hour one. Trip fees range from $50 to $300. Nationwide averages like these can go out of date and differ by area, so treat them as a rough check on a quote you were given.

No dated figure was found for how often firms offer free estimates, or for what share of them later turn into a sale. To get a real answer, phone two or three local firms, describe the same problem, and ask each one the same questions: Is there a charge to come out? What does it cover? Does it come off the bill if you hire them? Writing the answers down makes the comparison honest.

A flat quote can also make the fee question smaller. See flat-rate or hourly for how the two bills are built.

Who answers for what gets said during the visit?

A spoken estimate is hard to hold anyone to. The FTC favors a written agreement in every case, required or not. Some states do: California requires a written contract when combined labor and materials go over $500, as of November 2026. Other states set other lines; check state rules.

A visit you asked for can also change your right to cancel. Under the federal rule, a repair visit you requested is generally excluded from the three-day right to cancel, but extras sold during that visit, beyond replacement parts the repair needs, are not excluded. The rule covers sales of $25 or more at home, as of November 2026. The cancel page goes further. This is general information, not legal advice.

Ask who is coming, too. Certified plumbers in Washington must display a badge at work, and that state's hiring leaflet names cash-only demands as a warning sign. Other states set other rules, but those are fair things to notice anywhere.

Words to use

"Is there a charge to come out, and how much is it?"

"What does the fee cover, and does it come off the bill if you get the job?"

"Will your finding and the price come in writing before any work starts?"

"Please do not start anything today. The estimate needs reading first."

Also asked

Do plumbers charge just to come look?
Many do, under names such as trip fee or service call. A survey summary dated 2023 shows $50 to $300 and $100 to $350 for those two. Your area may run higher today. Ask on the phone before anyone drives over.
Is a free plumbing estimate really free?
Only if the firm confirms there is no charge at all, so ask that directly and write down the answer. Also ask what happens if the visit turns into a diagnosis, since a firm may treat looking for a cause differently from pricing a known job.
Can a plumber refuse to give a price without a paid visit?
This site found no rule either way. A firm may decline to guess at something it has not seen, which is a reasonable position. It should still explain the fee. If you need comparisons anyway, one quote or three may help you decide how many visits to pay for.
