Planning / Deposit or No deposit
Pay a deposit or none at all?
How much deposit a plumber can ask for depends on state and contract. California and Maryland cap home improvement deposits; ask if yours counts. For a short repair, paying nothing up front is fair. A special order may justify a small written deposit.

- If it is a short repair with common partsNo depositThe firm buys little ahead for you, so paying after the work is a fair ask.
- If a unit must be ordered just for your houseDepositA special order is a real cost to the firm; keep the amount small and written.
- If you are in California under a home improvement contractDepositThe cap is $1,000 or 10 percent, whichever is less, as of November 2026.
- If you are in Maryland under a home improvement contractDepositThe cap is one third of the contract price, and nothing is payable before signing.
- If they want cash, or most of the price, before work startsNo depositThe FTC says not to pay the full amount up front; find another firm.

What do the deposit rules say in each place?
| Deposit | No deposit | |
|---|---|---|
| California home improvement contract, as of November 2026 | Up to $1,000 or 10 percent, whichever is less | No cap issue; payments still cannot outrun finished work |
| Maryland home improvement contract, as of November 2026 | Up to one third of contract price, after signing | No cap issue; nothing is owed before a signed contract |
| New York home improvement contract | Progress payments go in escrow or are bonded; no cap found | Hold final payment until required inspections are finalized |
| Washington | A large deposit is a listed warning sign | Cash-only demands are also a listed warning sign |
| Everywhere else | Your state may differ; check before paying | Your state may differ; a written estimate still helps |
| Your risk | Money is gone before any work is done | The firm may not reserve a slot or order parts |

When would a deposit make more or less sense?
- The part cannot be returned once ordered, which makes a deposit easier to justify.
- The firm asks for more than a cap that covers your contract. Ask the California or Maryland board whether your job counts as home improvement.
- The payment is to go in a person's name rather than the business, a warning sign in Washington.
- The price grows mid-job. California requires a signed written change order, so ask for the same paper wherever you live.
- Your state is not named here. Check state rules before paying anything.
How much money should go out before the work starts?
Nothing found for this page sets a national deposit rule, and no dated survey of typical plumber deposits was found. The FTC offers three national pointers: some states limit down payments, nobody should hand over the whole price at the start, and the last payment belongs after the work is done and you are happy with it. This is general information, not legal advice.
For scale, Bob Vila's plumber cost roundup, a 2023 survey summary last updated that June from HomeAdvisor data, put a standard water heater install at $850 to $1,650 and tankless at $1,220 to $3,500. Those national numbers are over three years old, so expect local quotes to differ and perhaps run higher. If California's home improvement cap, as of November 2026, covers the contract, 10 percent of that $1,650 is $165, far below the $1,000 ceiling. Whether a given plumbing job counts is a question for the board.
Equipment is the usual reason a deposit comes up. Plumbing Supply and More, run by the same team as this site, has a hybrid heat pump water heater section that shows the kind of less common unit worth asking about. Ask your plumber whether a given model is stocked or ordered in. You can buy anywhere.

Who holds your money, and who answers if it goes wrong?
Check the business before the money moves, because a deposit is only as safe as the firm holding it. In Washington, plumbing businesses must be licensed as plumbing contractors with the state Department of Labor & Industries. Maryland's Guaranty Fund states: "The Fund applies only to work done by licensed contractors." So an unlicensed job there has no such fund behind it. Plumber licensing in Maryland itself could not be confirmed. See licensed or unlicensed for other states.
A card leaves more options if the deposit vanishes; see card, check or cash and, for a cancelled job, cancel or keep the contract.
Words to use
"Does this job need a deposit, and what exactly would it pay for?"
"Please write the deposit amount, the payment schedule and the finish date into the estimate."
"Is this water heater in stock, or does it get ordered just for this job?"
"If the part never arrives or the job gets cancelled, how does the deposit come back?"
Also asked
- What percentage deposit can a plumber ask for in California?
- California's contractor board says a home improvement down payment cannot be more than $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less, as of November 2026. Payments also cannot exceed the value of work performed. Other states have different rules.
- Is half down normal for plumbing work?
- No figure found for this page shows what is normal, so treat that as a claim to question. In Maryland, half would exceed the one-third cap on contracts its commission covers. Elsewhere, ask for a smaller amount or payments that follow finished stages.
- Should a plumbing deposit be paid before signing anything?
- Get the paper first. Maryland's commission says a contractor may not accept any payment until the contract is signed. Even where no such rule was found, the FTC suggests asking for a written agreement. Your state rules may add more.
- Does a big replacement make a bigger deposit acceptable?
- It can, since more is at stake for the firm, but state caps still apply. One quote or three covers how to set those side by side.
